NORFOLK, Va. – (VEN) Gregory Kyle Seerden, 31, a U.S. Navy Seal stationed in San Diego, was indicted for child pornography charges due to a sexual assault case that began in Hampton Roads.
A woman reported Seerden to NCIS for sexual assault on January 27, 2017. The report stated that on January 26, 2017 she and Seerden went out on a date and consumed some alcoholic drinks.
Seerden and the woman went to his hotel room aboard Virginia Beach at the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Ft. Story (JEBLCFS). Exact memory of the night were sketchy to her because she started to black out. However, she remembered being in a hotel room, Seerden being on top of her and telling him to stop.
Around 4:00 am, the woman woke up and Seerden told her that they had sex. The two left the hotel together. Seerden dropped her off outside of JEBLCFS Gate 5, where she told the gate sentry that Seerden had sexually assaulted her.
On January 27, 2017, a recorded communication of Seerden and the woman was conducted. Seerden claimed that he knew the woman was drunk and that the sexaul intercourse was consensual.
An investigation began after NCIS received a Command Authorization for Search and Seizure (CASS) from Seerden’s Commanding Officer, Seal Team One in San Diego for his cellphone. It was an attempt to find proof of the sexual assault.
A forensic extraction of Seerden’s iPhone 7 was conducted by a NCIS Digital Forensic Examiner on February 3, 2017. On February 7, the Examiner began analyzing the data from his phone and found images of alleged child pornography and suggested bestiality.
The Examiner discovered an estimated 78 images and four videos. Some of the images included “prepubescent children that were naked and engaged in sexual acts, specifically oral sex.” Other images showed nude children with their legs opened. Additionally, there were images of “a small child in underwear beside a male with an erect penis exposed, ” according to Gregory Seerden’s affidavit.
In one of the four videos that appear to have been taken by Seerden, it shows a white male masturbating by a sleeping minor female child around five or six years old. This particular video appears to have been taken January 1, 2017 and January 2, 2017.
The face of the adults and children in these images were not shown. One female child that was shown in the videos does not live in Virginia.
On April 3, Seerden was arrested in San Diego and charged with four counts of child pornography. Last Friday, he was is in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and was do to arrive in Norfolk for federal court. Seerden will serve a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison for producing child pornography, according to Joshua Stueve, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Seerden was born in Kansas City, MO. He was a Petty Officer First Class in Seal Team One.
Updated August 4, 2018:
On February 15, 2018, Ex-Navy Seal Seerden was sentenced to 27 years in prison, 25 years of supervised release, and fined $10,000 for producing images of sexual child abuse.
Moreover, he is facing charges in San Diego for an incident with a minor that occurred in the summer of 2014. With the new evidence in Virginia, the 2014 case — investigated by NCIS– was reopened. According to the United States Department of Justice “allegations in that case involve another minor known to Seerden, and the recording of sexual abuse involving the child on an iPhone, and are thus strikingly similar to the acts Seerden pleaded guilty to here.”
